ARGENTINA AVOIDS BRAZIL AFTER DRAW WITH AUSTRALIA

KUALA LUMPUR (1st Feb 2008)
Argentina got their wish of avoiding powerhouse Brazil in the semi-finals of the KL World 5s when they fought tooth and nail for a 3-3 draw against Australia here at the Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur.
Australia Greg Giovenali (No.4 in yellow)- Argentina Ignacio Caviglia (No.3 in white/lightblue) - Maximiliano Rescia (No.6)
But defending champions Argentina were made to toil hard for the draw, and the one point which saw them finishing at the top of Group A with 10 points – the same with Australia but on better goal difference.

"We wanted to play Brazil in the final – not the semi-finals," said Jose Fernando, the head coach of Argentina.

"But the game against Australia was very physical and since the referee allowed them to do it, they were aggressive throughout the match."

There was no denying that Australia proved they are the most improved side in the region in the manner of how they defended Argentina high up the pitch, before scoring the first goal as early as the third minute off a solo effort from Michael Skubala.

Argentina Jose Luis Godoy (No.9 - Australia Greg Giovenali (No.4 in yellow)/ Fernando de Moraes (No.8)/ Keith Robert Simon (No.5)

The Argentineans were hard-pressed after that and launched repeated attacks and finally saw the opening for the equaliser when Ignacio Cavilia blasted in the equaliser in the 12th minute.

But Australia trooped into the dressing room in an upbeat mood when Adrian Vizzari converted a penalty three minutes later for a 2-1 lead by the half-time break.

Argentina started stronger in the second half with a clever one-two between Alamiro Vaporaki and Pablo Basile for the latter to score, levelling the score at 2-2.

It was an even fight after that with both teams pushing hard for the winner and while Australia did finally score their third goal of the evening when Fernando de Moraes slammed home, there was no denying Argentina the one point when keeper Daniel Elias nailed the equaliser with less than a minute remaining on the clock.
Argentina Cristian Borruto (No.9) - Australia Greg Giovenali (No.4 in yellow)

"We played against one of the best teams in the world and held them to a 3-3 draw, so we should be proud of that," said Australia head coach Scott Gilligan after the game.

"Australians are known to be physical and if some people say that we are too aggressive, that is just the way we are. And tomorrow against Brazil, we will play exactly the same way."

ARGENTINA THROUGH TO SEMI-FINALS OF KL WORLD 5s

KUALA LUMPUR (31 Jan 2008)
– Argentina are through to the last four of the KL World 5's without having to raise a sweat.
Indonesia Deny Handoyo (No.10 in red) - Argentina Alamiro Vaporaki (No.5 in light blue
Another convincing victory today, this time over Indonesia in their third Group A match at the Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur, has assured them of a spot in the top two of the group standing and a place in the semi-finals.

They play Australia tomorrow, Friday, 1 February, in their final preliminary round match to decide the group champion, but coach Jose Fernando has decided what he needs to do next.

"We want to avoid Brazil in the crossover semi-finals and knowing that they (Brazil) would finish as group champion, we want to finish champion in our group too and so that we not have to play them in the semi-finals," said Fernando.

That means Argentina, the defending champion when the tournament was last held in 2003, are bent on beating Australia to finish their group matches without a loss.

And just like England and Malaysia before them, Indonesia found the South Americans a tough nut to crack.
Argentina Maurio Taffarel (No.4 in light blue) - Indonesia Jaelani Ladjanibi (No.6 in red)
The sharpness of Christian Borutto, Argentina's top hit-man, was all too evident as he hit two early goals in the 2nd and 3rd minute to give the champion a 2-0 lead. His next goal in the 7th min put Indonesia in sixes and sevens.

Another three more goals before the half was over with a hat-trick from Alamiro Vaporaki in the 11th,17th and 18th, made it even harder for the Indonesians.

Said Indonesia head coach Justinus Lhaksana: "We were completely outplayed and outfought in the first period. It was only after we changed our strategy in the second period did we managed to contain the Argentineans. But it's always difficult to play against such a strong side.

"Of course we fought hard, especially in the second half and I am proud of my team's performance. If we can improve on what we had just did maybe we will even be a better team in the making."

HOSTS HUMBLED BY DEFENDING CHAMPIONS
KUALA LUMPUR (30 Jan 2008) – Malaysia received a harsh a lesson in futsal from the reigning champion as Argentina strolled home to their second win in the KL World 5's at the Stadium Negara today.
Indonesia's Jaelani Ladjanibi (No.6 in red) against England's Shane Gill (No.11 in white)
Malaysia, winners over Indonesia on Tuesday, were found wanting against the South American giant and were hit for seven goals in a match, which not many had put their hopes on the host.

It started off promisingly for the Malaysians but once the Argentineans found  their footing,  problem loomed large and when their striker in chief Christian Borruto put one in the net for his fifth goal of the tournament, in the fourth minute,  the signs were encouraging.

But to everybody's surprise, Malaysia were level in the 12th min via the effort of skipper Addy Azwan Zainal, the hopes were raised.

But not for long. Argentina pulled ahead in the very next minute with a goal from Mauro Taffarel and then Maximiliano Rescia made it 3-1 in the 14th min.

The cause was lost for Malaysia and although they tried hard to reduce the score line, things were not working in their favour.

Alamiro Vaporaki scored goal No. 4 for Argentina in the 15th min, and Taffarel was on target again in the 18th min, thanks to a deflection, and the South Americans taking a 5-1 lead into the dressing room.
England's Leigh Holbrook (No.5 in white) against Indonesia's Jaelani Ladjanibi (No.6 in red)
The two goals in the second period, came from Iganicio Caviglia in the 21 st min and 35th min.

Malaysia's coach P.Balakrishnan: "There was no shame in our defeat because we fought hard and restricted them to a single-digit score. But we were up against a very good side and my hat off to the Argentineans.

"Nobody expected us to win and  the Argentineans wanted to win badly because they were looking for a place in the last four and that made it difficult for us. We have Australia next and if we want to make the cut into the last four we have to beat them. No other result would be enough."

Argentina's coach Fernando Laranagga: "We are happy with the win because we need to maintain our winning form if we want to reach the last four. The gap between us is clear for all to see.

"And the score line doesn't mean a thing. For us we want a win and we got it."

The KL World 5's takes place between 29th January and 3rd February 2008 at Stadium Negara, Malaysia's first indoor stadium and a national heritage building. The event will be telecasted to over 310 million viewers across Asia on STAR Sports with over 100 hours of coverage, comprising 30 telecast hours, including 20 hours of live programming - translating into extensive media exposure for Malaysia.

The KL World 5's will have a total purse of US$150,000, and feature 10 teams in this prestigious tournament. The event is expected to draw futsal fans from Malaysia and the region with the pedigree of the international teams such as Brazil, Argentina, Holland and England will join the likes of Asian champion Iran, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia and hosts Malaysia in action.

ESPN STAR Sports and the Ministry of Youth and Sports have a rich tradition of partnerships stemming from a multi-year strategic alliance signed in October 2005 to raise participation and interest in sport in Malaysia.

Futsal/KL World 5s: Malaysia given harsh lesson

MALAYSIA got a futsal lesson from world champions Argentina in the KL World 5s tournament at Stadium Negara yesterday.
Malaysia, 3-2 winners over Indonesia on Tuesday, were found wanting against the South American giants and were hit for seven in a match which only the foolhardy thought the hosts could win.

It started promisingly enough for the Malaysians but once the Argentines found their footing and got into rhythm, there was no stopping them. Christian Borruto opened the scoring in the fourth minute for his fifth goal of the tournament.

But Malaysia came back and equalised in the 12th minute through skipper Addy Azwan Zainal. Malaysia's joy, though, was short-lived as in the very next minute Mauro Taffarel made it 2-1 before Maximiliano Rescia added a third in the 14th.

Though Malaysia battled on, they never looked like scoring again. Alamiro Vaporaki (15th) and Taffarel (18th) made it 5-1 for Argentina going into the break. Iganicio Caviglia (21st and 35th) then completed Malaysia's misery.
"There was no shame in our defeat because we fought hard and restricted them to a single digit score," said coach P. Balakrishnan. "We were up against a very good side and hats off to the Argentines."

"We face Australia next and if we want to make the last four we have to beat them. Nothing else will do," the coach added.

In the other Group A match Indonesia made sure they would not finish bottom of the group by thumping England 7-2.

Asean champions Thailand picked up three points in their second match in Group B when they beat China 5-1.

The Thais, who were held 3-3 by the Dutch on Tuesday, came out with all guns blazing and scored all their goals in the first half, while China got their first goal of the tournament late in the second half.

In the other Group B match Brazil outplayed Iran 4-0.

MALAYSIA KICKS OFF KL WORLD 5S WITH VICTORY OVER INDONESIA

KUALA LUMPUR (29 Jan 2008)
– Malaysia got off to a rousing start in the KL World 5's at the Stadium Negara on Tuesday evening, showing their fighting spirit with a hard fought 3-2 win over Indonesia in their opening match.

But they had to do it the hard way in the Group A encounter against their Asean neighbour, having to come back from a goal down in the early minutes before things settled down eventually.
The Malaysian team celebrates with the fans after their win over Indonesia.

In the end it was skipper Addie Azwan Zainal's attacking flair and the knack for goals that caught out Indonesia.

But things were different from the start. Indonesia had greater possession and tenacity, which resulted in Rizal Rahim capitalising on a mistake by Malaysia when an attacking move broke down in the middle of the court, clinching the opening goal in the fifth min.

They held on to the lead until five minutes before the break when their goalkeeper Yos Adi Wicaksono was sent off for handling the ball outside the D.

Yet Malaysian could not capitalise during the two-minute period when Indonesia played with one man less until the 22nd min when Addie's shot from close range was deflected into goal by Indonesia's Beny Hera for the equaliser.

Addie was on target again in the 23rd min to give Malaysia  a 2-1 lead.

But Indonesia were back on the level terms again in the very next minute through Andri Irwan's goal and the match was headed for a grand finale.

It was Addie again who provided the breakthrough with the winning goal in the 29th minutr after Indonesia were caught flat-footed in the midst of their eagerness to snatch the winner.

"We were under tremendous pressure from the start. It was an opening match and the fans' expectations were very high. I must admit my players were nervous and didn't play up to expectations. But the most important thing was that we gradually recovered and took our chances well," said Malaysia's coach P.Balakrishnan.

"In fact, there is very little difference between the two sides. We scored more goals than them and that won us the match," he added.

Indonesia meanwhile were gallant in defeat.

"Malaysia took their chances and scored the goals they needed to win the match. That's the difference between winning and losing. But don't forget we had played an earlier match(losing to Australia 1-5) and we were very tired.

Indonesia's Angga Suryasaputra (No.14 in red) against Malaysia's Abdul Rizal Abdul Rahim (No.10 in yellow/black)

"But believe me Indonesia can play much better than what we did against Malaysia. Several of my senior players let me down today and the sending off of our goalkeeper was the turning point in the match," added Indonesia coach Justinus Lhaksana.

An earlier Group A match saw defending champion Argentina trouncing England 12-1 in a match which saw the South Americans displaying their class.

They led 8-1 at the break and added four more to make it a dozen with England's solitary goal coming from  skipper Richard Follett.

Argentina's scorers were  Christian Borruto(1st, 16th,22nd, and 37th min; Maximiliano Rescia( 7th, 19th and 29th);  Alamiro Vaporaki(12th and 13th); Ignacio Caviglia(19th); Santiago Basile(2nd) and Luis Gonzalez(33rd).

"Obviously the gap between Argentina and England is too big and therefore I am not surprised at the scoreline. England still have plenty to learn about futsal," said Argentina's coach Fernando Larranaga.

His counterpart, England's coach Grame Dell, said, "We will take probably another 30 years to come up to Argentina's standard. They are so competent on the ball and the skills they displayed was a joy to watch. We will still be in lower rungs of world futsal and our education process will continue."

In the meantime, Asean champions Thailand's hopes of a winning start to their campaign fell short of expectation when they were held to a 3-3 draw by Holland.

But the match was really too close to call for either team as Holland took a 2-1 lead at the break by goals from Dick Hulshorst in the eighth minute and Omar Neijari in the 15th minute.

Thailand's solitary goal in the first half came from Ekapong Suratsawang in the 13th minute.

However, Thailand were more brazen after the break and Panuwat Janta found the equalizer in the 21st minute before Ekapong gave them the lead for the first time in the match four minutes later.

But any thought of winning first three points was dashed for Thailand in the 31st minute when Karim Ajnane drew level for the Dutch as both teams had to settle for a point at the end of an exhilarating encounter.

Argentina ready for Kuala Lumpur

Argentinian FutsalReport by our argentinian collaborator Sebastian Larocca (Pasion Futsal)

On past friday, after the scheduled training session, the Argentinian national team head coach Fernando Larrañaga announced the final roster that will represent the country in the incoming international tournament KL World 5's to take place in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) since January 29th. Martín Amas, currently one of the best players in Argentina, will miss the event due to an injury. With respect to the players who were training in Buenos Aires, only Diego Biondi (River Plate), Martín Persec (River Plate) and José Luis Costas (Sportivo Barracas) were not included in the definitive roster.
Argentina, as known, is included in the A group, together with Australia, England, Indonesia and Malaysia.
